Ten year ban for man with 276 convictions found driving in Kildare

A man who came before Naas District Court with 276 previous convictions was disqualified from driving for a decade.

Peter Brazil, 46, whose address was given as 7 Ross Court Grove, Lucan, was prosecuted for driving without insurance.

Sgt Mary Meade said that on October 13, 2021 gardaí saw two males in a white Ford Transit van which was stopped at the rail station in Maynooth.

She added that the driver refused to give any details and she added he was disqualified at the time.

She said no insurance certificate or driving licence was produced.

The sergeant added that there were 187 convictions under the Road Traffic Act and 30 disqualifications had been  imposed.

The disqualifications included one for 30 years imposed in 2014.

The defendant, who was in custody, addressed the judge via videolink and said he is clean of drugs and is an enhanced prisoner (a status granted for exemplary behaviour and satisfactory engagement in structured activities).

He also said he is linking with a drug counsellor and had been using crack cocaine in the past.

Judge Desmond Zaidan said he would take him at his word that he was endeavouring to turn his life around. He imposed a driving ban of 10 years.

He said he would impose a six months custody term, telling the man “I haven’t added one minute to your sentence.”
