Tributes were paid to Sr Brigid Morgan, the first principal of the secondary school in Rathangan, who passed away recently.

Ardscoil Rath Iomgháin (previously Rathangan Post Primary School) said; "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Sr Brid, the first principal of Rathangan Post Primary after the amalgamation of The Mercy Convent with the vocational school in 1971. Sr. Brid was Principal of the school from 1971-1989.

"Her charismatic character, her love of Rathangan and her passion for education meant that she was loved and respected by all who worked with her and indeed by the whole community. Under her guidance and in accordance with the principles of the Mercy Sisters she oversaw the growth and development of education in Rathangan with the first senior cycle introduced in 1975 and the first leaving cert examination in 1977. Her legacy and that of The Mercy Sisters will endure and is one that all future management teams will aspire to uphold and promote."

Sr Brigid passed away at the Mater Hospital in her 101st year on January 16, in the loving care of the staff. She will be sadly missed by her niece, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, great-grandnieces, great-grandnephews, extended family, friends and her Mercy Community.

Her funeral took place in Dublin on Monday, January 20 followed by burial in the Community Cemetery, Inchicore.

In 2014, Sr Brigid was awarded the Benemerenti Medal for her sterling service to the parish of Baltinglass, Co Wicklow. She went to the parish of Baltinglass from Rathangan where she had entered the convent, taught and was principal until her retirement.

The Baltinglass Parish wrote; "The death has occurred of Sr. Brigid Morgan who served the parish of St. Joseph's Baltinglass for over 20 years. She directed the choir, prepared children for their Holy Communion and Conformation over her years in the parish. But more to that served us in prayer and sacrifice her whole life."
