Storm Éowyn has caused power outages across Kildare as record-breaking winds have knocked trees across electricity lines.

There are thousands without power in areas including around Naas, Newbridge, Blessington, Two Mile House, Athy, Nurney, Crookstown, Timahoe, Kildare town, Monasterevin and Rathcoffey.

The worst-hit areas are along the coasts, according to the powercheck.ie websites.

ESB Networks said extreme, damaging and destructive winds associated with Storm Éowyn have cause widespread and extensive damage to the electricity network across the country with over 715,000 homes, farms and businesses without power.

The 715,000 figure could continue to rise throughout the day.

It may take up to a week for some areas to be restored, due to the number of incidents.

"We apologise for the loss of supply. We are currently working to repair a fault affecting your premises and will restore power as quickly as possible," said the ESB.

Home owners are advised to keep an eye on powercheck.ie to keep up to date on the situation.
