Community demonstration called for Kildare village over Garda resourcing

Demonstration organised for outside Derrinturn Garda Station

A community demonstration has been organised for this Saturday, April 26 2025 at 2pm outside Derrinturn Garda Station, County Kildare, to highlight the ongoing issue of Garda under-resourcing in the area.

Aontú representative John Bryan has issued the call for the demonstration, describing it as a “community-led and non-party political” event.

The purpose, he says, is to provide local residents with a platform to express their concerns and demand action.

“The people of Derrinturn and the wider Carbury area are acutely aware of the under-resourcing of our Garda station and the knock-on effects of that - namely, an increase in anti-social behaviour and serious crime,” Mr Bryan said.

Continuing, Mr Bryan outlined a key demand that Derrinturn see a doubling in Garda figures: “In 2015, Derrinturn Garda Station had a peak allocation of eight Gardaí. That number has since been halved, despite population growth and rising concerns around community safety.

“We are appealing to the Minister and the Garda Commissioner to return Derrinturn Garda Station to similar peak staffing levels — i.e. a doubling of the current Garda presence — to ensure that policing in the area is effective and visible.”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend and make their voices heard on this vital community issue.

Local councillors in the Clane LEA have been formally invited to attend the demonstration and to engage directly with constituents on the need for improved Garda resourcing in the area.
