Trees removed from Kildare cemetery to make way for graves

New cemetery planned near Bodenstown

Trees have been removed from the cemetery serving the Sallins community.

The work was to be done by the end of the year and was completed last week.

The project entailed the felling of 11 cypress trees and some of them have been upcycled to be used by members of the men's shed in Kilcock

About five months ago a number of tenders were received by Kildare County Council for the removal of a significant number of trees from the historic Bodenstown Cemetery, the burial place of Wolfe Tone.

Kildare County Council also made an application for permission to do the work to the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and this could not take place until the bird nesting season closed.

Cllr Carmel Kelly

Cllr Carmel Kelly had highlighted the impact of the closure of the cemetery on the community and urged KCC to find a solution.

Cllr Kelly said if enough trees are removed it will ensure that local Sallins people who wish to be buried in their local graveyard can be buried there.”

However it is now known for sure how many more burials can take place there.

This is likely to depend on the root system of the trees, especially those close to the cemetery wall but Cllr Kelly said at least  ten more burials can take place and, depending on circumstances, perhaps up to 20.
