New residential accommodation has been proposed for a boarding secondary school in Clane.

The Jesuit Community and Clongowes Wood College Staff are seeking consent from Kildare County Council (KCC) for the development of a four bedroom (single-storey) Jesuit Community dwelling, a terrace of five three-bedroom (two-storey) staff family houses, and a row of three four-bedroom (two-storey) staff family houses, totalling nine houses, all on the school's grounds at Cappolis Road, Clane.

Planning permission would further extend to the provision of private amenity spaces, arranged around a central communal courtyard amenity space.

Documents also show that permission is also being sought for all associated and ancillary site development works that includes foul drainage connection to existing mains, surface water drainage and soakaways, landscaping, upgrading and re-surfacing of an existing access road, on-site car parking, and public lighting.

In addition, the proposed works would also include the removal of a contractor's compound/carpark and the recreation of an historic tree-lined site boundary.

It is noted in the documents that Clongowes Wood College and attendant grounds are protected structures.

The date received is listed as November 28 last, while the submission-by and due dates are listed as January 1, 2023 and January 31, 2023 respectively.

Clongowes Wood College, which was established in 1814, is set in 550 acres of countryside, which includes farmland and sports grounds.

The College is a boarding school for boys aged between 13 to 18.

In 2018, it was reported that 450 students were enrolled at the College.

The premises notably features in the well-known James Joyce's novel 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.'
