This past weekend has seen big-hearted students and supporters raise in excess of €50,000 for a charity that seeks to increase the involvement of blind or vision impaired people in sports activity.

The Galway Cycle is run by Maynooth Students for Charity which is an organisation made up of current and former students of Maynooth University and has raised in excess of €1.8 million for a variety of different Irish charities since 1987.

It has also introduced several thousand people to cycling in a supportive environment.

The 2019 edition is in support of Vision Sports Ireland which promotes sport and recreation for vision impaired people, and as a result, quite a few of those involved in this year’s Galway Cycle will be on tandem bikes.

That included Katie George Dunlevy, the current double world and Paralympic champion who cycled both to and from Galway from the college in Maynooth with the cyclists.

Last Friday, more than 100 cyclists and a considerable convoy of support vehicles headed for Galway, and after seven hours and 36 minutes of saddle time arrived into Eyre Square.

It took only six minutes more to make the return trip on Sunday. Each leg of the journey is 200kms long.
