File photo: Carlton Abbey Hotel, Athy
The derelict Carlton Abbey Hotel in Athy is to be given a new lease of life after planning permission was approved for a massive revamp.
Country Home & Venue Holdings has been given the go ahead to build two single storey glass extensions to the existing courtyard area.
One extension will be located off the existing main function room and the other extension will be located off the existing bar/lounge area. The company plans to remove the existing bar in the bar/lounge and demolish the internal walls of the adjoining kitchen and keg store (former Sacristy) to allow a new bar area to be constructed.
More internal walls will be knocked down to create an open lobby space. The plans also include changes to the existing gents toilets, the enlargement of one of the meeting rooms, installation of remotely operated electronic security gates and security fencing on the approach road to the hotel.
A large wedding suite will be created by combining two bedrooms on the first floor with access to a new small enclosed roof garden.
The building, which was a former convent, is a protected structure.
Country Home & Venue Holdings is based in Clontarf and lists Dermot Ryan as director with a business address at Fitzwilliam Street Lower in Dublin 2.
