Over 150 people attended the Light up the Skies ceremony in the Carmelite Church in Kildare town last Saturday night for World Suicide Prevention Day.

Organised by Kildare based charity Hope(D), attendees placed a candle at the alter for a lost loved one to suicide.

“It was a night to celebrate the lives of those who went too soon, and for all of us to embrace some of our happier memories of that person,” said Jim Brady of Hope(D) who spoke on the night.

“Hopefully with world suicide prevention day-we can all work together, learn and help others going through emotional difficulties, and that their families and friends be aware of the signs of emotional turmoil and try and prevent it happening.”

Later, at 10pm, to the lament of a lone piper Dave Usher, each person released a balloon from the church grounds into the sky. Philip Scott and Lorraine Nolan sang.

The chief Celebrant was Fr Paddy Smith Carmelite Order Knocklyon Dublin assisted by The Prior Fr Emaunel and Brother Sebastian.

Meanwhile counselling is provided at Hope (D) No 2 Henry Street Newbridge:1800 855834 or 087 151 3535 | or email contacthoped@gmail.com
