A man who allegedly assaulted and ill treated his three children came before Naas District court.

The man, who cannot be identified because of the nature of the allegation, made no reply when charged.

Detective Garda Paul Feely told the court that the children are now teenagers and their ages were in single digit figures at the time of some of the offences.

The garda told the court that it will be alleged that man wilfully assaulted, ill treated and neglected the children on dates between October 2012 and September 2021.

Det Gda Feely said that when charged the man made no reply.

He said it will be alleged that there was physical assault and “abandonment at home.”

The defendant's wife, is a co-accused and was also due to appear in court, he added.

The court heard that two of the children are in care and the older one is being assisted and is in education.

The garda indicated that Tusla, the Child and Family Agency are involved in the matter.

The garda said there was no objection to bail provided the defendant resides at a named address in the west of Ireland, provide information about any change of address, signs on once a week at a named garda station, surrender his passport and not apply for alternative travel documents.

The court heard that a mobile phone number at which he can be contacted has been provided and he must not have any contact with any witnesses in the case.

Solicitor Matt Byrne said the allegations are “fully contested.” He said a family relationship had broken down in 2016 and there has been no contact since then. The case was adjourned for the preparation of a book of evidence.
