Kildare North TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport James Lawless TD has described the introduction of security guards on Dublin Bus vehicles as a positive and proactive step.
Security guards have begun operating on some Dublin Bus services from Monday in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour on some routes.
Welcoming the announcement, Minister Lawless said: “We all need to feel safe on public transport. As a regular commuter and a former Chair of the Oireachtas Justice Committee I understand the need for security on board public transport routes.
“Anti-social behaviour on public transport is happening too often and public transport operators are finding it difficult to counter this behavour due to resourcing issues. It is causing huge concern for both members of the public using the services and public transport workers. It is not acceptable that our transport routes are being marred by such behaviours.”
“That is why I welcome the move to introduce security guards. The launch of the Safer Journeys Team by Dublin Bus is a further positive step towards making it safer for passengers.
“The 20-week pilot scheme will not only provide a visible security presence, but it will also give valuable insights into the impact of such an initiative and best practices for the sector as we strive to meet demand for the ever-increasing numbers of people opting to make the switch from their cars to more sustainable transport modes.”
Minister Lawless added: “Ultimately, I believe a public transport police is an essential part of the ecosystem here and remains needed. However, in the meantime, I commend Dublin Bus and other operators for being proactive and taking their own measures to protect the public and their own staff.”
