Tributes paid to former Fine Gael mayor and member of Kildare Co Council

The late Rainsford Hendy

Rainsford Hendy, former member of Kildare County Council and Mayor of the Country will be laid to rest on Friday. 

Mr Hendy, passed away peacefully, on Saturday, 14th September 2024 at Naas General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

His remains will be reposing at his home in Timolin (R14 AR28) on Thursday from 3pm - 8pm, concluding with prayers.

The funeral service will be held on Friday, 20th September at 2pm at St. Mullin's Church, Timolin (R14 VP71) after which he will be laid to rest in the adjoining churchyard.

House is strictly private on Friday morning.

Family flowers only please. Donations, if desired, to The Friends of Naas Hospital.

Mr Hendy is predeceased by his wife Hazel and brother Robert.

He is the much loved father of Robert, Elizabeth, Jill and Sandra and is forever remembered by his sister Freda, brother Lambert and dear friend June.

He was the proud grandfather of Sarah, Kate, Ava, Samuel, Ella and Charlotte.

Also sadly missed by his daughters-in-law Suzanne and Gráinne, sons-in-law Stephen and Jeremy and a wide circle of relatives, friends and the community he loved.

Rainsford was first elected to Kildare County Council in 1991 serving almost two decades representing the Athy electoral area up to 2009 when he retired. 

He held the position of Mayor of the County and also contested two general elections.

Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Martin Heydon said: "During Rainsford's time as a member of KCC, he delivered locally for individuals, local businesses and community groups. 

"He was passionate about public service and continued to highlight local issues and campaign long after his own career in local government had ended."

He added: "Rainsford was a great friend, mentor and supporter of mine, encouraging me to go into politics when he decided to retire in 2009.

"Ever since he has been a constant support to me in my political career."

Mr Hendy was a proud supporter of the Irish Cancer Society’s Daffodil Day in memory of his wife Hazel and sold Daffodils in the area for 44 years up to 2024.

Mr Hendy will be sadly missed by his children Robert, Elizabeth, Sandra, Jill and their families.

The Piers Café in Moone, where Mr Hendy was a regular, also paid tribute. 
A post on its Facebook page said: "We are saddened to know of the passing of Rainsford Hendy … a loyal patron and friend to the Piers Cafe.
"He had a favourite seat where he enjoyed a chat, a small cappuccino and a browse of the Irish Times every day for several years now.
"May you rest well Rainsford. Sincere condolences to your daughters Elizebeth, Jill and Sandra, son Robert, your partner and constant companion June and all of their families."
