Preparations are well underway for the arrival of the French delegation to Kildare town in August for the 30th anniversary twinning celebrations.
Chairperson of the Kildare Twinning Committee, Mary Kavanagh explains that 21 people from Corp Nuds will be staying in the town from August 15 to 18 along with Mayor Alain Prijent.
"We are really looking forward to it. I have taken over from the late Pat Sweeney, who has left a lasting legacy as the driving force behind twinning in Kildare. They are big shoes to fill, but I will do my best with the help of the hardworking committee," says Mary.
With 11 host families signed up, Mary says they are in need of three to four more homes who can give their visitors a warm Kildare welcome.
The committee has also been running a fundraising campaign.
"We had a very successful quiz night in Cill Dara Golf Club recently, and the golf club have been very good to us by allowing us a place to hold our meetings. We also have a digital programme where businesses can pay €40 to be included. There is also a patron's list where people can pay €10 to have their name listed. They will also be included in a draw," adds Mary.
The itinerary for the visit is as follows:
- Thursday evening at 5.30pm: meet and greet at Kildare House Hotel where the French visitors will meet their host families
- Friday at 12 noon: the signing of the 30th Anniversary Twinning Oath in Solas Bhride
- Friday afternoon: the guests will be going to The National Stud to walk around the gardens and admire the horses or sit and have a coffee
- Friday evening: BBQ in the Community Garden at Campion Crescent and the planting of a tree in memory of the 30th anniversary
- Saturday: day at the races. Those not going to the races can avail of the Free Walking Tour in the town, or ramble around Kildare Village
- Saturday evening: Meal at Cill Dara Golf Course followed by music and Irish dancing by Lisa Rooney/Moore dancing school
