Kildare County Council announces road closures ahead of TriAthy triathlon 2024

A number of roads will be temporarily closed to facilitate the running of the TriAthy triathlon 2024, Kildare County Council (KCC) has announced.

KCC, on behalf of the TriAthy triathlon, gives notice in accordance with Section 75 of the Roads Act, 1993 and the Roads Regulations, 1994 that it will close the roads at times specified below on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

The first road to be temporary closed will be the Athy Distributor Road (section of the N78), from the R418 Junction (roundabout) to the Fortbarington Road Junction, from 7.15am until 4pm.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

Traffic travelling east on the N78 will be diverted at Fortbarington Road Junction to the R428, then onward to the L4015 through Athy Town Centre, onto the R428, before re-joining the N78 east of Athy.

Traffic travelling west on the N78 will be diverted at the R418 Junction (roundabout) to the L4015 (through Athy Town Centre), then onward to the R428 before re-joining the N78 west of Athy.

SECOND NOTICE

The second road to be closed will be the R417, from the L4015 Junction (Emily Square, Athy) to the  L4009 Junction (Maganey Crossroads), also from 7.15am until 4pm.

Traffic travelling north on the R417 will be diverted at Maganey Crossroads.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

Diversions will be via the L4009 into Castledermot, followed by the R448 to Timolin, followed by the R747 to Mullaghmast (over M9/Junction 3 bridge) and the N78 to Athy.

Traffic travelling south on the R417 will be diverted onto the N78 to Mullaghmast (over M9/Junction 3 bridge), onwards onto the R747 at Timolin, followed by the R448 into Castledermot and the L4009 to Maganey Crossroads.

THIRD NOTICE

The third and final notice from KCC refers to a number of roads: the L8084 from Levitsown to Kilkea; the R418 from Kilkea (L8084 Junction) to Castledermot; the L8086 from the R418 (Sill’s Cross) to Castleroe West Crossroads; and the L8087 from Castleroe West Crossroads to Beaconstown Cross.

These roads will be closed from 7.30am until 3pm.

ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

Traffic travelling north from Castledermot to Athy will be diverted at The Square, Castledermot.

Diversions will be via Hobartstown (on the R448) and run to Kilkea where traffic may rejoin the R418 Athy/Castledermot Road to Athy.

Traffic travelling south from Athy to Castledermot will be diverted at Kilkea towards Hobartstown (on the R448) and then southward to Castledermot.

Diversionary routes will be clearly signposted, as agreed with KCC and An Garda Síochána.

KCC has also said that emergency access and restricted local access will be maintained.
