A concert will take place at Millicent Golf Club on Saturday, May 11 at 8pm, to help raise funds for the Kildare branch of the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. Two choirs, Staplestown Choir and Every Voice Choir, Clane, will sing well-known and loved songs, spanning a diverse range of genres from ballads to pop and classical numbers, and when possible, audience participation will be encouraged.
The Kildare-based Alzheimer’s Society provides invaluable support and activities for those suffering with dementia. Funds raised at this event will help provide respite for caregivers. Funding will also help provide home-based programmes for people suffering from dementia. This element is invaluable as it extends each person’s involvement and link with their community, for as long as possible.
Every Voice Choir, Clane, was an initiative developed by a nurse at Naas Hospital, Vanessa Lynch, who noted a common theme voiced by patients – a great love of music and singing, and its power to connect. She approached community representatives in Clane and so the choir was formed in early 2018. It now has 25-30 steady members who meet weekly to chat and sing and perform a range of material. Membership is drawn from Clane and the surrounding areas. If you love to sing but don’t want to audition, this is a place for you!. Past and most recent performances include successive appearances at Clane’s well-established Annual Christmas Concert, a joint performance with Full Harmony, a Maynooth-based choir, run by Gráinne Henaghan, in the Aula Maxima, and most recently, performances at SuperValu, Clane, to raise funds for the 2024 Clane, St Patrick’s Day Parade. They are delighted to perform and are grateful for the financial backing of a community grant from Kildare County Council and Croí Laighean Credit Union, Clane.
Staplestown Choir, a 20-strong chorus and a mixed 4-part choir, was founded in 1996. The group sing at 11.15am mass every Sunday. They also perform an annual Christmas concert, preparation for which, begins in September following the summer break. Work commences in February as they turn their eyes to a summer concert or choir competition. Above all we are a social choir that like a challenge. The choir was led until recently by Annamarie Curren who conducted the choir for 12 years.
