€120,000 has been allocated to continue renovation work on the Round Tower in Kildare town (PICTURED, FILE PHOTOGRAPH).
Over €390,000 has been allocated under the 2024 Community Monuments Fund, in order to conserve archaeological heritage in County Kildare.
Nearly a third of this funding will go towards renovation works for the Round Tower in Kildare town.
Welcoming the news, Minister Martin Heydon said: "This strategic funding initiative supports a wide range of conservation projects, highlighting the government's commitment to preserving Ireland's rich archaeological heritage.
"Kildare’s allocation includes €120,000 to continue renovation works that have been ongoing on the round tower in Kildare town on the grounds of St Brigids Cathedral, and €110,762 has been allocated to improve Dunmanogue Graveyard.
"Further allocations include €100,000 towards the upgrade of Laraghbryan cemetery, as well as €29,999 for Donadea Forest and €29,520 for Confey Church."
The Fine Gael politician continued: "The allocation of funds of €390,282 to these five Kildare projects from the Community Monuments Fund will directly contribute to the conservation, maintenance, protection, and promotion of our cherished local monuments.
"This investment both preserves our historical sites while also giving a boost to our local economy through the creation of thousands of hours of employment opportunities for specialist craftspeople and traditional skills practitioners.
"Since its establishment in 2020, the Community Monuments Fund has become a pivotal part of our national strategy to enhance the resilience of our archaeological sites against the impacts of climate change and to improve their accessibility; this funding enables essential repairs and capital works that are crucial for the conservation of these important Kildare monuments.
"This funding represents a significant investment in the cultural heart and soul of Kildare."
