There are no plans at present to install additional signage at Kilcullen.

That’s according to Kildare County Council (KCC), who made the comments at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held on Wednesday, February 20 last.

Fine Gael councillor Tracey O'Dwyer asked KCC to confirm if it plans to install street and laneway name signage in the town of Kilcullen, in order 'to assist tourists to locate the many attractions within the town.'

KCC told Cllr O'Dwyer: "The Transport Department have no plans to install additional signage and have a preference to keep the level of signage at a minimum in town centres, in particular, where footpath widths are constrained.

"Fingerpost signs are regulated in accordance with Section 254 of the Planning and Development Act 2000 and there is an application process to progress these."

KCC continued: "The development of bespoke signage on streets and laneways would require careful coordination to maintain the character of the town centre, in particular where heritage buildings are impacted."

"It may be appropriate for the community to identify the locations required, the source of funding for the project when the next steps in the process could then be identified," KCC concluded.

Cllr O'Dwyer said that while she noted the report, she did not accept it, and would follow-up with the matter offline.
