A breakdown in taxi fare negotiation resulted in one man making an appearance at Naas District Court on Thursday, January 11 last.

The man was charged with refusing to pay a taxi fare.

He told Judge Desmond Zaidan that he was charged €120 over what should have been a €30 journey in County Kildare.

Although he offered to pay the taxi driver €70, the taxi driver refused his offer.

"It was an outrageous price," the man said: "I also told the gardaí that he (the taxi driver) should have had a (dashcam) camera in his car."

Gardaí noted that his reply after caution was: "Do you not think I have been ripped off?"

When Judge Zaidan asked the man if he accepted that he did not pay the taxi driver, he replied: "Yes, I did not pay it because it was an outrageous fare."

The judge applied the Probation Act on the man for the offence.
