The refurbished pool in Athy in 2019
Funding is necessary to undertake upgrading or replacement work at the K Leisure pools in Naas and Athy.
K Leisure is part of a pilot programme with the mid east energy authority, which includes county councils in Kildare, Meath and Wicklow with the aim of helping the councils to meet climate action targets in 2030 and 2050.
It also identifies retrofit works needed at leisure centres.
According to Kildare County Council large scale capital works are needed in the swimming pool sites
However the timeline for these works is “unknown and subject to funding.”
Some €676,000 has already been spent improving K Leisure in Athy in advance of the opening of a gym extension in May.
A total of €98,000 has been sought for other improvements. The changing area needs to be replaced along with cubicles and lockers at a cost of €120,000.
KCC says it continues to undertake repairs and the cost of these and minor capital works in 2023 up to October for the Athy site is €231,337 and in 2022 investment for repairs in Athy amounted to €292,231.
