The councillor made the comments at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held in Kildare County Council's headquarters at Devoy Park in Naas.
A new development in the works could provide 'huge potential' for Newbridge.
That’s according to Fine Gael councillor Tracey O’Dwyer, who made the comments at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held on Wednesday, December 13 last.
At the meeting, Cllr O’Dwyer motioned for Kildare County Council (KCC) to carry out a feasibility study of linking Corbally Harbour to Newbridge to Pollardstown Fen to the Miltown Canal feeder, 'as a first step in developing a 50 kilometre amenity canal loop, centred on Newbridge.'
Her motion was seconded by her party colleague Cllr Peggy O’Dwyer.
KCC told Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer: "The provision of an amenity link between Corbally Harbour, Newbridge and the Milltown Canal Feeder is one of the options already under development as part of the Newbridge Area Based Transport Assessment.
"This and all the other options will be presented to the Elected Members in early 2024 in advance of the next phase of public consultation on this project."
KCC added that it has also secured funding as part of the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme, in order to examine the feasibility of developing a greenway along the Corbally branch of the canal, and to provide links to Newbridge and Kilcullen along the River Liffey.
The comments were made by councillor Tracey O'Dwyer (Fine Gael).
Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer expressed her optimism for the plan, saying: "This has potential for Newbridge.
"We need to think big and Newbridge needs to be at the centre (of the proposed development); this will be a great opportunity to have Newbridge at the centre."
However, she acknowledged that the plan is in the early stages of development, and added that 'local land owners will need to be liased with.'
Mayor of Newbridge and Fianna Fáil Cllr Noel Heavey commended Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer’s suggestion, calling it 'a super motion', while Cllr Peggy O’Dwyer said that she agreed with Cllr Tracey O’Dwyer’s sentiments, and joked that the canal loop 'could be our (Kildare’s) little Camino.'
