16 Men’s Sheds located throughout County Kildare are set to benefit from a new €1 million fund.
Under the initiative, grants of up to €3,000 will be provided to Men’s Sheds across the country.
The funding is designed to assist Men’s Sheds with running costs such as heating, electricity utility and insurance bills, and individual grants will be distributed to the Men’s Sheds via its representative body, the Irish Men’s Sheds Association, through an application process which includes qualifying criteria for the fund.
Commenting on the announcement, Fianna Fáil Senator Fiona O'Loughlin said: "The Men’s Shed networks have gone from strength to strength in recent years and is a wonderful organisation.
"Men’s Shed’s go some way to help tackle isolation and provide a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment where men of all ages can come together to socialise, share skills and work on meaningful projects."
The Newbridge-based politician continued: "As the evenings get longer and the weather colder, its so important that people remain connected and socially engaged.
"I am particularly pleased to see the Men’s Sheds in Newbridge, Monasterevin, Athy, Kildare town and Rathangan, which I know provide huge supports."
She concluded: "I want to commend the 16 Men’s Sheds for their work and commitment and I have no doubt this funding will be a big help in tackling the rising costs for the operating."
The 16 Men's Sheds are located in: Leixlip, Na Fianna, Johnstownbridge, Maynooth, Kilcock, Monasterevin, Newbridge, Kildare town, Clane, Naas, Athy, Celbridge, Confey, Cooleragh, Kill & District and Rathangan.
