Calls have been made for a scenic canal bank area in Leixlip to be made more accessible for the public.

Cllr Bernard Caldwell wants Kildare County Council, in conjunction with Waterways Ireland, to “put in place an entrance to the canal at Cope Bridge to allow accessibility to the new pathway by all users.”

Cllr Joe Neville has asked KCC to examine “making the area in and around Cope Bridge at the greenway in Confey more accessible for all users.”

Cope Bridge is a masonry road bridge dating from 1790 and spanning the Royal Canal. The bridge is approximately 1.4 kms (nearly a mile)  from the centre of Leixlip. The bridge was extended in or around 1846

Immediately to the west of the bridge is Leixlip-Confey train station, built in 1990.
