The long-awaited opening of new road is 'a historic day' for Athy residents, according to one Kildare South Senator.
Labour Senator Mark Wall made the comments today in advance of the official opening of Athy’s new Distributor Road (ADR).
The new 3.4 kilometre road, which had an original cost of €27 million, is funded by the Department of Transport under Project Ireland 2040.
The scheme will radically reduce traffic congestion and travel times for local residents, commuters and tourists: especially during events such as the Electric Picnic and the National Ploughing Championships.
Commenting on the news, Senator Wall, who hails from Athy, said: "It was great to see the excitement today, as so many families and individuals came together to walk and run the road in advance of the official opening.
"After so many years of waiting, this road now gives Athy a future that will allow it to grow and expand into a modern town."

He continued: "Already, I have met with businesses who want to invest in Athy and bring or expand their businesses here, and with the development of the Blueway, Model School and Shackleton Museum, foundations are being laid for Athy.
"What we need to see now, is for the town to exploit its unique location and develop its economic potential to complement its growing social and infrastructural status."
"Today Tuesday, October 31, is a historic day for the town... today we should acknowledge all those who have played their part in getting this road open for Athy.
"It is right to acknowledge all those in Kildare County Council that played their part and to acknowledge the builders BAM for getting this project opened well before the expected finish date."
Senator Wall concluded: "Athy is a great place to live, it is a town with a great future, with great people and a town that I am proud to represent every day of the week."
