Users could soon be paying €13 per month to use Facebook and Instagram ad-free

The potential plan is being considered for users in the European Union.

Tech giant Meta is exploring the implementation of a €13 per month ad-free plan for Instagram and Facebook for European Union members.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), as part of Meta's plan, the company would charge roughly €10 a month on a desktop for a Facebook or Instagram account, and about €6 for each additional linked account.

The publication added that when it came to mobile devices, the price for a single account would jump to roughly €13, as Meta would have to factor in commissions charged by Google's and Apple's app stores.

It follows an initial report from The New York Times.

A spokesman for Meta told the WSJ that the company believes in "free services which are supported by personalised ads."

However, they said that the company "is exploring options to ensure we comply with evolving regulatory requirements."

In the context of Ireland, Meta made headlines earlier this year after it was fined €1.2 billion by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) over breaches relating to the transfer of personal data from the EU to the US.

Shortly afterwards, Meta announced that it intended to appeal this sentence.

The business said in a statement: "We will appeal the ruling, including the unjustified and unnecessary fine, and seek a stay of the orders through the courts."
