A Fine Gael councillor has stressed the need for bus shelters beside a school and church in Newbridge.

Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer made the comments while speaking at the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting held on Wednesday, September 20.

She out forward a motion calling on Kildare County Council (KCC) to install the shelters near St Conleth's and Mary's National School / St Conleth's Infant School and St Conleth's Church.

Her motion was seconded by her party colleague Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer.

Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer (LEFT) was supported by her colleague, Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer (RIGHT).

In response to Cllr Peggy O'Dwyer's motion, KCC said: "Fifteen new locations for bus shelters have been identified in 2023 across the county, with the agreement of the National Transport Authority."

"The provision of a bus shelter at this location can be considered for inclusion in the 2024 programme of works, subject to technical and financial approval with the NTA," KCC added.

Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer also enquired about the criteria for potential bus shelters to an engineer with KCC.

The engineer replied that there is no set criteria for selection, and that it the selection is done separately to the Active Travel scheme.

He added that Caragh and Togher were identified as priority spots for bus shelters to be installed.

The engineer also said: "We welcome any suggestions from any councillors for possible sites to install bus shelters."
