CULTURE NIGHT IN KILDARE:  Jam packed programme at Naas Library

Naas Library has a jam-packed programme of events for all ages planned for Culture Night, tomorrow, Friday 22 September.

The programme celebrates the ECO Showboat Mayfly – a vibrantly coloured solar-powered boat that has been touring Ireland’s inland waterways for the last two years. It will be docked in Naas Harbour that evening as part of the 2023 expedition. So come and see the Mayfly or join the Eco Showboat crew with local artist Marta Golubowska and Indian Irish musicians Anna Tanvir and Maninder Singh at Naas Library for an evening of workshops, film and music.

 4:00pm: Meet the Invertebrates

Meet the invertebrates who live in our waterways. Eco Showboat scientific collaborators will show you some of the little creatures that live in our waterways and talk to you about endangered species, invasive species and other problems facing freshwater environments.

5pm-6pm: Ukulele Concert with Kildare North Ukulele Club

Join us for an hour of memorable ukulele tunes with the Kildare North Ukulele Club.

6:00pm-7:00pm: Ceramics Workshop with Marta Golubowska.

Workshop for children (8+) with ceramics artist Marta Golubowska.

7:30pm: Talk on the ECO Showboat

Meet Anne & Denis who will talk about their two-year solar journey on the island’s waterways, show you their studies and observations of nature and tell of their encounters with artists, activists and scientists who explore with them the problems and promises of the freshwater environment.

8:00pm: Film Screening: Winter on the Water

Film ‘WINTER ON THE WATER’, a documentary made by Cleary Connolly with the artist Marta Golubowska, looking at her family life living on a canal boat at Robertstown in County Kildare and in particular at the challenges of living on the water in wintertime.

9:00pm-10:00pm: World Folk Music Concert with Anna Tanvir & Maninder Singh

Anna Tanvir & Maninder Singh perform their own compositions and folk songs from around the world in many different languages. Their programme is a soul-stirring musical journey from India across Europe, to Ireland, praising the beauty of nature and the wonder of the natural world. Indian refreshments will also be served.

Biodiversity Art Exhibition [On display Friday 22-23 September]

Along with the ECO SHOWBOAT Programme of Events, the library will also host a Biodiversity Art Exhibition which is a collaboration between Sallins Biodiversity Group and St Laurence’s N.S. #MapOfLife2022 was a community project to learn about and record biodiversity in Sallins. Sallins Biodiversity Group encouraged residents of all ages to participate in nature & art workshops and to then record local wildlife through art and citizen science.

It featured 20+ artists and groups including the National Museum of Ireland, #SundayFishSketch online art project, The Herpetological Society and An Garraí Beag (Down Syndrome Kildare), McAuley Place as well as local artists such as Joanne Murray and the Green Roots Project. The project was fully embraced by St Laurence's National School. All 24 classes in the school welcomed an artist or scientist to their classroom. All events were provided free of charge to participants.
