Kildare's Gables Guesthouse being considered for refugees

Kildare's Gables Guesthouse being considered for refugees

The Gables guesthouse in Newbridge could soon be used to house people seeking refuge in Ireland including those fleeing Ukraine.

In response to a query from the Leinster Leader, the International Protection Accommodation Services (IPAS) said it was “responding to an offer of accommodation made in respect of this property. “

It added; “A full assessment of the property is underway at present, and, if a contract is agreed, it is hoped that this property can be brought into use.”

The 25 bed guesthouse on the Athgarvan road was sold at auction last June. It was put on the market with a guide price of €1.3m.

This substantial 22,000 sq.ft. property has a leisure centre and is situated on the banks of the River Liffey, only a short walk from the town centre.

Set on 1.3 acres, it also comes with a 20 metre swimming pool, sauna, spinning studio, gym, changing rooms, two jacuzzi and a steam room. It was previously a family run business for the last 25 years.

IPAS is responsible for the provision of accommodation and related services to people in the international protection (‘asylum’) process.

“As of September 6 2023, IPAS is providing accommodation to 23,185 people seeking refuge in Ireland and since January 2022 have brought 170 properties into use to ensure that all those who arrive in Ireland seeking shelter can be accommodated,” it said.

Refugees are people who have fled war, violence, conflict or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country.

An asylum seeker is a person who has left their country and is seeking protection from persecution and serious human rights violations in another country, but who hasn't yet been legally recognised as a refugee and is waiting to receive a decision on their asylum claim.
