A man who was found with four Collie puppies in his car was prosecuted at Naas District Court was banned from keeping animals for five years.

Anthony Stokes, 24, whose address was given as 5 Carton Terrace, Poppintree, Ballymun, Dublin 11, was before the court for a breach of the Animal Health and Welfare Act.

Sgt Dave Hanrahan outlined that the incident arose following a single vehicle accident on May 8, 2021, at 11.50am on the M4 at Killickweeny, Kilcock.

He said the defendant had the animals in the back of the car and they were in “a poor state.”

The court heard there was inadequate food, drink or bedding.

The puppies were approximately 10 weeks old.

Garda Conor McCarthy said they were brought to a vet who deemed them to be poorly cared for.

He added that the vet bill amounted to €800.

The puppies were later homed through the My Lovely Horse animal rescue charity.

Garda McCarthy said the defendant indicated he bought them that day in Kinnegad but he had no documentation.

Defending barrister Aisling Murphy said messages on a social media platform indicated the defendant’s interest and he was aged 21 at the time.

She added he works as a dump truck driver and he had intended to care for the animals.

The defendant was never in trouble before.

Judge Desmond Zaidan also imposed the minimum fine of €4,000 as well as ordering that the defendant pay the €800 bill.
