A couple who were involved in an incident in a shop in Athy were handed down custodial sentences.
Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed custodial sentences on both defendants on Thursday, June 22 last, at Naas District Court.
Stefan Dolan, 28, with an address listed as Aldborough House, Swords Road, Santry, Dublin 9, County Dublin, and Danielle Holland, 25, with an address listed as 2 Holywell Rise in Swords, County Dublin, were convicted over an incident that took place on June 21 last at approximately 3.30pm.
Gardaí said that Mr Dolan had stolen €16 worth of items from a deli in the shop, and tried to make off with the items.
It was also heard that when he was confronted by a staff member, he became embroiled in an argument with them, and threatened one of the staff members.
Mr Dolan pleaded guilty to the theft offence.
It was heard that Mr Dolan has 15 previous convictions, which include convictions for arson, assault, criminal damage and robbery.
Defending solicitor David Gibbons told Judge Zaidan that his client was a father to two children, and had an alcohol addiction issue.
After consideration, Judge Zaidan imposed a 10-month custodial sentence, and said that if he wished to appeal the sentence, he would set the appeal at €250.
When Ms Holland appeared before the judge, she insisted that she stole the items, not her partner, and that he never threatened any of the staff members.
"The charge sheet is incorrect," she added.
It was heard that she has 28 previous convictions, mostly for theft and road traffic offences.
Judge Zaidan imposed a three-month custodial sentence on Ms Holland, and set her appeal at €150.
She told the Judge that she plans to appeal her sentence.
