Cllr Colm Kenny
Many tributes have ben paid to departing Naas politician, Cllr Colm Kenny.
Cllr Kenny, who was nominated to Kildare County Council after his Green Party colleague Vincent P Martin became a member of Seanad Éireann.
At a Naas Municipal District meeting, Cllr Fintan Brett said Cllr Kenny was an “absolutely true Green Party perkson” who had been associated with environmental and biodiversity issues before becoming member of KCC.
Cllr Kenny announced in April that he would be resigning, citing the pressures associated with being a politician and working full time.
He told his party members that he is leaving “with a heavy heart as it was an absolute privilege and honour to serve my native community as their public representative.”
He added: “I will continue to work for my community, striving for a greener, cleaner Kildare, but no longer in the capacity as a county councillor.”
In June 2020, he was co-opted on to the council, sitting on the Naas Municipal District. He would have faced the electorate for the first time at the next poll, scheduled for 2024.
The Green Party will now nominate a replacement councillor.
Sen Martin said Cllr Kenny had made a significant contribution to his local community and the green movement.
