Kildare residents are essentially being ‘pinned’ in one area, according to one councillor.
Fine Gael Cllr Peggy O’Dwyer highlighted the issue at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District on Wednesday, April 19.
She motioned for Kildare County Council 'to install a pedestrian crossing onto the R445 to facilitate crossing from Curragh Farm Estate to safe walking routes to schools.'
In response to her motion, KCC said in its report at the meeting: "There is no funding available to install new signalised pedestrian crossings in the county."
"This location is on the route of the NTA funded R445/R416 Newbridge Active Travel Scheme.
"However, funding is only available in 2023 to progress the design to Options Selection Stage," KCC added.
Cllr O’Dwyer stood by her initial comments, adding that there is 'no connectivity' present in the region.
"There is no traffic management in place whatsoever,” she told KCC: "I think we need to consider these measures immediately."
Cllr O’Dwyer further said: "You can’t go left, right, up, anywhere in the area... residents are pinned in there."
She also admitted that she was perplexed that An Bórd Pleanala 'didn’t look at how to get out (of the area) during the planning permission stage.'
CROSS-PARTY SUPPORT
Her sentiments were echoed by Fianna Fáil politician and Chair of the meeting, Cllr Suzanne Doyle, who told KCC that costs should be looked at in order to provide the crossing.
Cllr O’Dwyer’s party colleague, Cllr Kevin Duffy, also agreed with her and Cllr Doyle, adding that the situation 'seemed to be like in Kildare town, where there are some housing estates that are built on islands.'
After listening to their concerns, a representative of KCC told those in attendance that the matter could be discussed at the next full county council meeting.
