Sallins
New bollards to be provided in Sallins to mark out cycle paths.
This follows criticism that many of the bollards which were put in place originally have been damaged, mainly by passing traffic.
Sallins councillor Carmel Kelly has also complained that the black bollards aren't visible at night.
Kildare County Council engineer David Reel told a Naas Municipal District meeting 80 orange bollards are on the way to the town and the visibility of the new ones will be assessed.
The meeting was also told that to date the council has incurred costs of approximately €4,200 for the hire of a mini road sweeper to clean the cycle track area.
And this is in addition to €2,600 to purchase replacement bollards.
It was also pointed out that is a cost for the crews replacing and cleaning bollards, including traffic management and this cost is ongoing and can be reviewed when the current works are completed.
Cllr Kelly stressed that she fully supports the project and Cllr Bill Clear pointed out that there have been a number of accidents, including fatal collisions.
Cllr Clear also acknowledged that since work was done to make Sallins safer there is considerably less speeding through the town - and “this was the aim.”
Cllr Fintan Brett said the number of bollards being knocked over suggested that many drivers are not paying attention.
The bollards were also defended by Cllr Colm Kenny who said they’re there to protect cyclists and pedestrians and “they’re doing this.”
