There is no funding at present for a pedestrian crossing in Newbridge, Kildare County Council (KCC) has said.
KCC issued the information in response to a motion by Fine Gael councillor Peggy O’ Dwyer at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District meeting, which was held on Wednesday, March 15 last.
Cllr O’ Dwyer motioned for KCC to install a pedestrian crossing on the Green Road, Newbridge.
KCC told Cllr O’ Dwyer that while this crossing formed part of the original National Transport Authority’s (NTA) works on the Green Road, funding has been reduced, and as such, there is no funding available for her request at present.
Cllr O’ Dwyer was critical of this decision, citing the need to protect local residents. She told KCC: "There is no safe way for children and parents to cross the road at present."
When KCC asked those in attendance if they wished to proposed a motion to write to the NTA about the issue, Cllr O’ Dwyer opted to put forward this motion, which was seconded by Sinn Féin Cllr Noel Connolly.
