The difficulty in sourcing funding for some projects was debated.
Lack of funding for certain projects was brought up at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District (MD) meeting, which was held on Friday, March 3 last.
At one point during the meeting, Labour Party councillor Angela Feeney put forward the following motion to Kildare County Council (KCC): 'That the council give immediate consideration to reviewing road traffic and pedestrian safety measures on the Newtown Road, Maynooth from the M4 motorway bridge to the entrance/exit of the Maynooth Town Football Club.'
This would include measures 'to slow down traffic approaching the club entrance/exit, and the provision of a pedestrian crossing to facilitate safer crossing to the footpath opposite the entrance/exit.'
KCC replied that while the MD Office would be in favour of a push-button pedestrian crossing being provided near the entrance to Maynooth Town Football Club in order to allow pedestrians cross the road safely (as there is only a footpath on one side of the road), 'there is currently no funding source for the provision of new pedestrian crossings in the county.'
In response, Cllr Feeney said that while she accepted the report, she was nevertheless ‘disappointed’ by the apparent lack of funding.
She also asked KCC if there was any possibility that funding could be taken from the Active Travel fund in relation to the issue.
Engineer Donal Hodgins responded: "If there was any funding available, we would be happy to resolve it (the issue at hand)."
