Irish Rail urged to remedy dangerous area in North Kildare

Irish Rail will be asked to immediately install a safety fence in an area located in North Kildare.

Fianna Fáil councillor Paul Ward called on Kildare County Council (KCC) to write to Irish Rail in relation to the matter at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting held on Friday, February 3.

Cllr Ward explained that a safety fence would curtail the open access to the rail line adjacent to the Ledwill Estate in Kilcock.

Speaking about the area, he said: "There is an accident waiting to happen here.

"I’m astounded at how simple it is to access the area, it is possibly the worst stretch of land in North Kildare."

He added: "I want a letter sent by KCC to Irish Rail, and it should be marked 'urgent.'"

Cllr Ward’s sentiments were shared by Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney and Fine Gael Cllr Tim Durkan, with the latter referring to the land in question as being 'extremely dangerous.'

When Cllr Ward’s party colleague Naoise Ó Cearúil asked if KCC could place fences at the site in the interim, he was told by an engineer with the council: "There are no temporary fences secure enough for the site."

It was ultimately decided that KCC would write to Irish Rail to highlight the concerns over the area.
