Trip hazards are plaguing estate in Kildare, councillor says

A housing estate located in Maynooth contains numerous trip hazards.

That’s according to one councillor, who made the comments at the latest Clane-Maynooth Municipal District meeting which was held on Friday, February 3 last.

Green Party Cllr Peter Hamilton told those in attendance that Meadowbrook Estate 'is one of the most complex estates in the county,' but added that there were 'historic problems' in the area.

"It’s not a happy place to live," he said.

Cllr Hamilton said that a number of tree-stumps located in the estate pose a trip hazard for residents.

He further said: "We should actively start tree-planting works here, and I would appeal to my colleagues to support this."

Cllr Hamilton’s sentiments were supported by Labour Party Cllr Angela Feeney, who also emphasised her concern for health and safety standards in the area.

Fine Gael Cllr Tim Durkan also said: "The estate is broken up into different areas, with a different number of houses... the costs of works would be low in some areas, but if they continue to deteriorate, then the costs will rise.

"I also have no issue with planting new trees, but we have to be mindful of where we plan to plant them."

When Fianna Fáil Cllr Naoise Ó Cearúil asked Kildare County Council (KCC) if any funding could go towards resolving the issues, KCC engineer Cyril Buggie replied that if they could get some of the estate taken in charge (of), 'then that would help.'

He also stressed that consultation with locals would be needed before any remedial works could take place.

KCC also noted in its report at the meeting that it would undertake a review of funding options.
