An Garda Síochána Kildare has issued a warning, reminding the public to be vigilant as reports of bogus tradesmen tend to increase at this time of year.

According to gardaí, individuals may call to homes offering roof repairs, gutter cleaning, driveway work or other “urgent” jobs, often claiming they are working locally or have leftover materials. These fake tradesmen are also known as cold callers.

The public are asked to be aware of individuals offering to 'fix' roofs, gutters or carry out driveway work and to be cautious of those making requests for large cash payments upfront.

Cold callers are also known to pressure people into making an on-the-spot decision as well as claiming there is urgent or dangerous damage that needs to be rectified as soon as possible.

Giving advice on how to protect yourself from this fraud, local gardaí advise not engaging with the cold callers, never agreeing to work on the spot and getting written quotes from reputable, established contractors.

As well as this, the public are also urged to check references and reviews before agreeing to anything and talk to a family member or trusted friend about the works.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in Kildare said on social media, "Please keep an eye out for elderly or vulnerable neighbours and share this advice with family and friends. If you have concerns or wish to report suspicious activity, contact your local Garda Station. In an emergency, call 999 or 112. Stay alert. Stay safe."
