BREAKING: Man found guilty of murder of friend at Grand Canal in Kildare

A Rathangan man has been found guilty of murder by a jury in the Central Criminal Court sitting in Kilkenny.

28-year-old man Robert Broughan of St Patrick's Park, Rathangan was found guilty of the murder of Roy Hopkins (34) near the Grand Canal in Rathangan, Co Kildare on July 31, 2020.

Gardaí said Mr Hopkins died following an assault by a “blunt instrument” which gardaí believed to be a baseball bat.

A number of locals from Rathangan travelled to give evidence in the trial, which began on February 17.

The jury in the Central Criminal Court sitting in Kilkenny spent 2 hours and 53 minutes considering their verdict.

The jury told Mr Justice Tony Hunt they found the accused guilty by a unaimous verdict 

The case was adjourned to Central Criminal Court sitting in Dublin on April 7 for sentencing.
