Athy Community College
The proposed extension to Athy College has taken a massive step forward as the Department of Education and Skills this week issued a Schedule of Accommodation for the new build.
The process has now begun which should see the multi million investment progressing to design and build over the next couple of years,
“ The new Schedule of Accommodation will bring the capacity of Athy College from 450 to 1000 students and will include a much larger sports hall, additional 4 Science labs, 20 additional classrooms, a music suite, a custom built special needs accommodation and much more. We are delighted that the Department has responded so promptly to our extraordinary growth. Athy college opened its doors on the new campus in 2010 and has trebled student numbers in the eight year period and is installing 3 temporary classrooms this September to meet demand in the interim” said principal Richard Daly
Chairperson of Athy Board of Management Cllr Aoife Breslin paid tribute to the committed staff and management of the school which she remarked “has been the education success story of South Kildare. Not only is this an outstanding opportunity for future generations it also represents the most significant financial investment in the town in many years. The availability of school places makes Athy a more desirable location for people to live and the increase in employment will have a hugespin off to local business” .
Local TD Martin Heydon who has been campaigning for additional school places in South Kildare said that the new extension would provide over 500 additional places. Athy College has been very generous in sharing its resources with other schools on campus and the local community so this investment has a spin off benefit to hundreds of young people and the town of Athy. While I will continue to campaign for other schools in the region it is important that that the announced extensions gets delivered in the shortest possible time and because it is an extension itcan have the shortest delivery date to answer immediate demand”
Athy College is a KWETB School which welcomes students of all faiths and none.
