Irish duo join 'once in a generation' cast for new Netflix Pride and Prejudice series

Netflix are behind the latest retelling of the Jane Austen classic which boasts an impressive cast with production now in progress

Netflix has announced the final cast for its upcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The much-anticipated series has two Irish actors on board for the project with Nenagh's Daryl McCormack and Cobh's Fiona Shaw set to feature. 

McCormack, best known for his roles in Peaky Blinders and Twisters will play Mr. Bingley. Shaw, who has played big roles in Killing Eve and True Detective is set to play the formidable Lady Catherine de Bourgh. The pair will be familiar with each other as they both appeared in Sharon Horgan's Bad Sisters on Apple TV. 

The series will be lead by Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite, The Crown) who will play Mrs Bennet. She will be joined by Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) who will play Mr. Darcy along with Emma Corrin (Nosferatu) who is set to play the role of Elizabeth Bennet. 

Other members of the cast set to feature include Rufus Sewell (The Holiday) who will be playing the beloved Mr Bennet. Freya Mavor (Industry) will portray Jane Bennet alongside Rhea Norwood (Heartstopper) who will act as her sister Lydia Bennet.

Production is already underway on the series which will be depicting one of the most iconic novels of all time. It's being described as a 'faithful, classic adaptation of the Jane Austen novel'.

The adaption will be released as a six-part limited series with the date yet to be finalised. 

The series is written and executive produced by Dolly Alderton (Everything I Know About Love) and will be directed by Euros Lyn (Heartstopper). Speaking earlier in the year,  Dolly Alderton said: "Once in a generation a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky (that) I get to be apart of it". 

Speaking on the source material she'll be working with, Alderton continued: "Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy, it has been a joy to delve back into it's pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life". 

The series will be produced through Lookout Point, a BBC Studios Company which is a leading television drama producer for British and global audiences. Some of its most recent productions have included Renegade Nell, starring Derry Girls star Louisa Harland for Disney+ and Happy Valley, led by Sarah Lancashire (Kiri) for the BBC.
