Fitness trends can come and go, but a new event called Hyrox has begun sweeping the globe in recent years. The event that bills itself as the ‘The World Series of Fitness Racing’ is an indoor fitness competition that combines 8 km of running and eight functional workout stations, alternating between the two.

After getting involved in the recent phenomenon, Kill man Eric Gavin took his talents to Toulouse for a Hyrox competition and, after attempts at previous events, took a silver medal back to Kildare. The proud haulage man from PJ Gavin and Co. in Kill, stood on the podium alongside teammate Sean Morris after a second place finish in the 40-49 age category.

Competitive
“I was hoping to podium at some point because I am competitive in my age category,” Eric said. “It was incredible because all of your hard work and hard training has paid off. It is a great feeling and a lot has to line up for you too. We had to go via Stanstead, so it was nine hours door to door to get there.”

After the gargantuan challenge, the 47 year-old finished 28 seconds off first place and therefore just missed out on a spot at the Hyrox World Championships in Chicago this June.

The competitions leading to the Championships move across many cities with upcoming events scheduled for Rotterdam, Valencia, and Glasgow.

“I used to play a lot of rugby and played GAA with Kill. Then I started doing Crossfit and later came across this place in Tallaght called Back 2 Basics, which is where I found Hyrox,” Eric explained.

While excited about the prospect of further events and successes, Eric is focusing on his business and young family for the time being after his podium finish in Toulouse.
