Reunion night

The Round Towers Senior Championship winning team of 1996 held a reunion recently at Cunninghams in Kildare town and a large turnout enjoyed a DVD of that famous game when Towers defeated Johnstownbridge 1-13 to 0-10.

The team also won the Herbert Cup and Clonakilty National 7 a side competition the same year.

There was also a DVD of interviews with local people on the Saturday before the game. A big thanks must go to Brendan Thompson and the late Barney Mc Court for putting this together back in 1996 and also to Dessie Scahill for providing commentary on the game.

The club made a presentation of a commemorative medal to the players on the night and there was a special mention for Fergus Hopkins, the club captain back in 1996, who sadly passed away. He will never be forgotten.

The players had a great time telling stories of years gone by. Many members of the team have gone on to become the backbone of the club, including current Round Towers Chairman Frank Mc Mahon, who said he hoped to see them all in two years time for the 1998 reunion.

Paddy Mc Carthy and his band provided music and food was supplied by Paddy Byrne, who was the manager of Towers in 1996 and his commitment to this bunch of players was remarkable.
