Kildare suffer agonising All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Armagh

Armagh defeated Kildare 3-9 to 1-12 in a thrilling All-Ireland quarter-final encounter
Kildare exited the 2026 All Ireland Senior Championship with an agonising defeat to Armagh in Box-It Athletic Grounds. Near misses is undoubtedly the story of The Lilies’ season but they have proved once again that this young team is only a few percentage points away from that next step.
It was an emotional occasion for Kildare who were reeling after the tragic news of the passing of manager Pat Sulivan’s father in the build up to the game. Kildare captain Laoise Lenehan said after the game that the players gave all they could to repay Sullivan for his presence on the day and that him travelling to the game “showed the type of man and manager that he was.”
It was The Lilywhites with the early possession in this game and they opened the day’s scoring too with a fine switch of play to Nanci Murphy finishing with the Kilcullen midfielder dropping one over the bar.
Aimee Mackin levelled things briefly but Kildare were straight down the other end with a point from Alannah Prizeman. Kildare penetrated the Armagh defence on a number of occasions and looked much more dangerous in attack than they have been on many occasions this season.
Pat Sullivan’s side were then denied a goal by brilliant last ditch defending from the home side. Jessica Harney was shut down in front of goal before the Eadestown forward managed to regain possession and set up Lara Curran. The Milltown forward’s shot beat the ‘keeper but did not find the net with a retreating Blaithín Mackin getting a leg to it on the line.
Kildare continued their strong start to go two clear at the 10-minute mark when Aoife Rattigan knocked over a free-kick.
Scores were hard to come by early in this game but it was far from dull with contests for possession and turnovers all over the field in this very open contest.
Rattigan put Kildare three clear at the midway point of the first half when she worked a free-kick short with a one-two with Molly Aspell before popping over.
Armagh picked up their first score since the sixth minute when Emily Druse collected her own effort, which had hit the upright, to fire over off her laces.
The home side were back within one when Kelly Mallon punished a Kildare 3v3 breach from the resulting set-piece.
The Lilies were undeterred and captain Laoise Lenehan carried them up the field once more and won a free for Rattigan to register her third.
Armagh answered with a set-piece of their own which kicked off a disastrous sequence that killed The Lilies’ first half efforts. The game was level after a poor kick-out following Mallon’s free was struck over Blathín Mackin.
Yet another kick-out gone astray had even more disastrous consequences when Aimee Mackin found the net. After superbly denying Aoife McCoy a certain goal earlier in the half, Corla Nallen did not get enough on Mackin's effort to keep it out. The goal concession rounded off a disappointing spell for the Kildare stopper.
Two minutes later, the damage was amplified when Mackin found the net for a second time. The Shane O’Neill’s forward linked up superbly with Mallon and found the top corner of the net in fabulous style with an outside of the boot strike.
There was time left in the half for Aoife Rattigan to stop the rot with her fourth point as Kildare went in 2-5 to 0-6 behind after playing a great deal of the football in the opening half an hour.
After the restart, Mayah Doyle grabbed her first point of the afternoon when she punched a hole in the orange wall to score.
Aimee Mackin was again on point for Armagh in response, this time from a free.
Lara Curran became the fifth Kildare woman to score when she made this game 2-6 to 0-8 after 37 minutes of play.
The Lilies were fingertips from a one-point game when Gillian Wheeler slipped a galloping forward Ruth Sargent through on goal. Sargent let fly off her left side which Armagh ‘keeper Brianna Mathers brilliantly tipped away from goal to deny Kildare.
Aimee Mackin knocked over her third point before Alannah Prizeman hit her second and second off her weaker left foot to make this game 2-7 to 0-9 with 15 minutes to go.
Kildare were plugging away throughout the second half but struggled to breach the Armagh backline beyond that chance for Ruth Sargent.
In the midst of The Lilies’ push, the game was seemingly taken away from them when Aimee Mackin took aim at the posts yet again. The brace scorer saw her effort drop short but then turned into the net by the hand of Kelly Mallon.
It looked a long way back for Kildare but Alannah Prizeman gave them an instant lifeline when she spun sharply inside the box and fired the ball under the sprawling Armagh goalkeeper.
Less than a minute later, The Lilies were in again with Molly Aspell having a clear sight at goal this time but the wing-forward missed wide of the mark.
After a point further at each end from Lisa Shaw and Róisín Mulligan, the home side led 3-8 to 1-10 ahead with five minutes to go.
In the end, a disastrous 90 first half seconds looked set to cost Kildare with Armagh able to just keep their noses in front by registering points at the right time.Caroline Hanlon hit one of those to put Armagh five clear with four to go on the counter-attack.
It went right to the bitter end in this game with Eadestown duo Abaigh Cahill and Ruth Sargent getting Kildare back to within three.
With the clock against them, Kildare could not get one last effort at the Armagh goal as they finished 3-9 to 1-12 worse off in this All-Ireland SFC quarter-final.
Armagh progress to face Galway or Mayo in the final four while Kildare’s season came to an end.
