Brazil part of 9 man GUI squad for winter training

Naas golfer Robert Brazil off to South Africa

Robert Brazil

Robert Brazil sprung to prominence last April when becoming the third member of Naas Golf Club to capture the West of Ireland Golf Championship in five years, following in the steps of Jack Hume (2014) and Jonathan Yates who was successful in 2016.

After capturing the title with a birdie on the 18th at the famous Rosses Point course, Brazil had high praise for his coach, Gavin Lunny, and indeed his two fellow Naas golfers.

Now Brazil, 22 this year, has been selected by the GUI to be part of a nine man panel heading to South Africa for a winter coaching trip, departing on Tuesday February 12, the squad will take in two events: the South African Amateur Championship (King David Mowbray GC, February 17-22) and the South African Amateur Stroke Play (De Zalze GC, 26 February 26-March 1).

Along with Robert will be recent Australian Amateur Open champion Conor Purcell (Portmarnock) Robert Cannon (Balbriggan), Alex Gleeson (Castle), Tiarnan McLarnon (Massereene), Ronan Mullarney (Galway), Mark Power (Kilkenny), Caolan Rafferty (Dundalk) and James Sugrue (Mallow).

Ireland team captain John Carroll and GUI National Coach Neil Manchip accompany the squad.

The GUI's High Performance Programme is supported by Sport Ireland and Sport NI.
