Sarah Mc Dermott
Sarah Mc Dermott is a blogger and teacher from Newbridge. ‘Sarah’s Secrets’ is her fashion, beauty & lifestyle blog.
Sarah is the daughter of Maireád and John from Newbridge. She is the eldest of four children, and has two brothers, Liam and Mark, and a little sister, Grace. Sarah studied for 4 years in Froebel College of Education/ NUIM and has been working as a primary school teacher for five years.
WHAT IS YOUR FIRST KILDARE MEMORY?
A fun fact is that I was actually born in Perth, Australia, and lived there until I was nearly 7! So my first memory is starting primary School in Scoil Mhuire in Newbridge. It was almost time for my class to make our Holy Communion and I felt so under pressure to learn all of the prayers! I didn’t have a clue.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THE COUNTY?
I like the way Kildare is quite modern and moves with the times. It’s growing and getting quite built up but most of our towns and areas still hold on to some sense of ‘community’ and people knowing each other, which you may not have in a big city.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL DAY SPENT IN KILDARE?
I love Saturdays! Ideally (if I could fit all of my favourite things in) I would start off with a quick gym session in K-Leisure, then head for brunch and coffee in Ubh Café in Newbridge; have a wander around the shops in Whitewater; head out for a walk around the Curragh or Punchestown.
Then a curly blow dry and chat with my hairdresser and best friend Tom Henry, get my makeup done, and head out for a few drinks in Naas!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT IN KILDARE?
It’s hard to choose just one! If I was out for dinner and a few drinks with the girls it would have to be Las Rada Tapas in Naas or Tani Japanese for something a bit different. If I’m with my boyfriend he wants ‘real food’ like something with spuds so we love Lock 13 in Sallins and Rustic in Naas for pizza!
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BLOG?
I decided to start ‘Sarah’s Secrets’ about three years ago. It started simply because I was regularly asked questions about my makeup, hair, or nails and a few friends encouraged me to start a page where I could share tips or advice with girls or women who had similar interests. Supporting local businesses and people has
helped to grow my following, although I am still a relatively small blogger by all means! I don’t worry too much about numbers — fellow women and teachers message me regularly to say they enjoy my honesty and ‘realness’ which makes me more than happy.
HAVE YOU ANY PLANS IN RELATION TO THE BLOG?
Obviously I work full time as a teacher which is my main focus Monday to Friday, but I would love to see my blog grow and connect with more people through social media. Currently I am brand ambassador for Dolly and Bella, an Irish online clothing store so it is a big achievement for me being in that role!
I am also the charity boutique ambassador for Jack and Jill, a cause which is close to my heart.
I would like to work with some more of my favourite brands, particularly Irish companies; but my followers know I only ever showcase things I genuinely like!
