The report from 50 years ago
Martin Foley, aged six, of Dooley Terrace, Athy, was saved from drowning on Friday by the heroic action of Athy Urban District Councillor, Michael Rowan, the Leinster Leader reported on October 19, 1968.
Mr Rowan and Mr George Speirs, Burtown, were on their barge at the lock adjoining the Dominican grounds when Mr Rowan heard children screaming.
There was no sign of the youngster in the water, but Mr Rowan noticed air bubbles coming to the surface.
He dived in fully clothed and on the bottom located the boy and brought him to the surface.
On the bank the two men applied artificial respiration and after some minutes the boy had regained consciousness and recovered fully.
