A man was fined €1,000 for careless driving at Athy District Court on Tuesday, September 25 last.

Jonathan Dick, with an address listed as 17 Bridgefield Manor, Athy, came to the attention of gardai on September 12, 2017, when his car hit an elderly pedestrian lady who was out walking at Shanrath East.

The court heard that the defendant’s car brushed off the elderly lady as he passed her by. He was fully co-operative with gardai and took flowers and chocolates to the injured party the following day.

The car tipped her shoulder when the defendant verged off the road slightly. The woman was on the verge not far from her house at the time. Since the accident she cannot live independently and requires family members to care for her.

The court heard that there was no malice intended from the defendant and that he has since made an effort with the injured party.

The defendant’s insurance has since covered all costs incurred by the injured party the court heard. The defendant was fined €1,000 and given six months to pay the fine.
