'Minor measures' have been put in place to address road safety issues near one County Kildare school, Kildare County Council (KCC) has said.

The comments were heard at the latest Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District (MD) meeting, which took place on Wednesday, July 15 last.

At around the half point of the meeting, Social Democrats Cllr Chris Pender submitted the following question: “Can KCC provide an update on the road safety concerns raised at Scoil na Naomh Uilig in Newbridge including the request for interim protective barriers / bollards at the school entrance, any discussions with the school and An Garda Síochána, and the next steps and expected timeline?”

It follows after he previously informed KCC back in the MD’s May meeting that a child was nearly backed into by a car near the school.

Responding to Cllr Pender’s query, KCC said via the report it presented at the meeting: “The MD Office plan to have some minor measures in place before the start of the upcoming school year.”

“The KCC Road Safety Officer has been in contact with An Garda Síochána in respect of the next steps in the process,” KCC added.

Following this, Cllr Pender asked KCC: “Is there any sense of a timeline?”

This prompted a representative of KCC to tell Cllr Pender that while there was no timeline in place, they did say that KCC will install temporary bollards before the schools return in September.
