People using the trains on the Maynooth line have complained about poor service.
Now, Cllr Aidan Farrelly has called on Iarnród Éireann to address Kildare commuters’ complaints about poor quality since revised timetables came into effect in August.
“There is widespread dissatisfaction with the reliability of Maynooth commuter services since following the new timetable,” he said.
He added that the changes have since been “reviewed and tweaked” but this has done little to allay concerns.
“Workers and students have reported trains being consistently delayed and regularly stopping between stations due to congestion on the line at Connolly Station or because of signalling problems. This unacceptable situation is leading to longer journey times and overcrowded carriages.”
With similar experiences reported on Northern Commuter and DART services, many Dublin students attending Maynooth University are now increasingly at risk of missing their connecting trains at Connolly station, he said
He said Dep Catherine Murphy has written to IE to raise these concerns. She has asked the company to again review the performance and punctuality of services and implement a schedule that works for commuters.
Cllr Farrelly, the SD candidate in Kildare North for the general election said if people are to leave cafes at home, public transport must be efficient, dependable and comfortable.
“Unfortunately, this is currently not the experience of rail commuters in north Kildare.”
