Stolen jeep driven at speed on M7 near Naas as roadworks take place

The stolen vehicle was driven along the M7 at speed

A stolen jeep was driven at speed from Dublin towards Naas while road widening work on the M7 was taking place.

Gardai pursued the vehicle, a Ssanyong Kyron, from Tallaght early today.

The pursuit lasted over an hour and came to an end when the vehicle crashed shortly after 3am in Portarlington.

A garda spokesperson described the incident as a controlled operation, one where the gardai monitor the vehicle they are pursuing but avoid taking direct action to bring it to a halt.

“This was a very dangerous situation, the jeep was driven at high speed with no regard for road safety or the fact that people were working on the road,” the spokesman told the Leader.

The incident began at 1.30am with the theft of a jeep and was followed by alleged incidents of assault and criminal damage.

The jeep was pursued along Belgard Road and onto the N7 by Tallaght garda.

It was driven along the emergency lane outside Naas for a period in a bid to evade the gardai.

Road works were taking place at the time but nobody was injured.

A 34 year old man, understood to be from the Tallaght area, was detained in Portarlington  after the gardai decided to use pepper spray .

He was later taken to Tallaght garda station.
